Scorpids are a geographically isolated species found in the Chagos archipelago in the middle of the Indian Ocean. They belong to the family of scorpionidae and differ from other arachnids as their pedipalps are claws; but for geological reasons, the species has gone through genetic mutations which have separated it into several sub-species: scorsericums, scorpapillos, scorsaltus and scopiscis, land and sea scordomums and diurnal and nocturnal scornibus.

Eva Chettle is a Franco-English artist living in Barcelona. Since her childhood, she has been passionate about biology. But her sensitivity and her need to work with her hands led her in 2006 to study Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, specializing in sculpture. In 2013, she returned back to Paris to join the casting workshop of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle. In this fascinating environment, Eva created her first hybrid assemblies. Subsequently, she joined the casting workshop at the Musée du Louvre, where she participated in the conservation of French artistic heritage while perfecting her moulding techniques, which she would use in her future creations. At the same time, in 2018, she published Fabuleuses Chimères, written and illustrated in the style of 19th century naturalists. The book explores the imaginary animal behaviour of her chimeras. In 2020, she returned to Barcelona and applied her mastery of volume working on set design and scenography. Meanwhile, Eva never lost sight of the need to expand her bestiary. Currently, her creative horizon focuses on animating her creatures, by the integration of robotics to bring them to life and conquer the world.

Eva Chettle has been drawn to collecting elements from the natural world since her early childhood - shells, bones, seeds, roots and more. Once removed from their native habitats, these fragments transform into relics, prized for their shape, colour and beauty. Interestingly, these diverse remnants of the past always seem to assemble in perfect harmony, fashioning hybrid creatures akin to both aliens and prehistoric beings. In a way, they experience a resurrection, transitioning from natural decay and eventual obscurity to becoming integral components of a sculptural ensemble known as 'Chimera.' Beyond their formal and aesthetic allure, Chettle endeavours to transport viewers into the realm of the unknown. Through her own bestiary, she narrates the behaviours of each inhabitant, prompting reflection on our perception of reality and challenging the assumptions we hold dear. In doing so, she offers nuanced variations to Darwin's Theory of Evolution, inviting us to reconsider the boundaries of the natural world.
